Atlas of the Theban Necropolis Information

When zooming in on the Atlas of the Theban Necropolis or panning across the screen, there are a few tips that will help speed the download time and make your experience a more enjoyable one. Keep in mind, the file that you are viewing is over 360 MB so you may have to be patient at times.

Use the show button to view the aerial with various sites highlighted and their accompanying textual information, or use the hide button to simply view the image without any visual obstruction.

You can pan across the aerial image by clicking on the image and dragging the cursor and then releasing it. You cannot pan across an area from within a highlight. Some of the larger areas that have been highlighted are designed to disappear as you zoom in on the aerial image. This will avoid filling your entire screen with a highlight.

When zooming in to a very detailed segment of the image, you should first drag the area you want to zoom in on to the center of your screen by panning, and then use the slider to zoom in. This will be faster than zooming in and then panning across the image.

Atlas performance tips

The Atlas of the Theban Necropolis is a robust tool that may challenge the performance of some computers. The following tips may help increase responsiveness, movie playback speeds, and animation smoothness:

While the Atlas is accessible for users with the Flash Player 5, using the latest version of the Flash player significantly improves playback speeds and the loading of tombs in the Description mode. To download Flash, please visit Macromedia Downloads to get the latest version.

Minimize the number of applications running and the number of browser windows open while the Atlas is active. If the computer is busy running another application or displaying the contents of a different website, this can undermine performance of the Atlas. Macintosh users may benefit from allocating more memory to their browser:

  • Locate the browser application file on the hard disk.
  • Click once on the application icon to highlight it.
  • Choose "Get Info" from the "File" menu, and then choose "Memory" from the sub-menu.
  • Under "Memory Requirements" you will see three values: Suggested size, Minimum Size and Preferred Size. Change the Preferred size to at least 48MB.
